About Catalan Conjugation
Catalan Verb Conjugation
Catalan verbs divide into three conjugation groups: first (-ar), second (-er/-re), and third (-ir). The first conjugation is the most productive, with most new verbs adopting the -ar pattern. Like other Romance languages, Catalan inherited its verb system from Vulgar Latin, but developed several distinctive features.
The Periphrastic Past: Catalan is unique among Romance languages in using "anar" (to go) + infinitive as its primary simple past tense: "vaig cantar" (I sang, literally "I go to sing"). This construction replaced the Latin-derived simple past in everyday speech.
Weak Pronouns: Object pronouns in Catalan attach to verbs in complex ways, combining and changing form. Mastering pronoun placement is essential for natural-sounding Catalan.
