About Finnish Conjugation
Finnish Verb Conjugation
Finnish verbs are organized into six types based on their infinitive endings and stem behavior. The verb type determines how the stem changes before personal endings are added, and consonant gradation — the alternation between "strong" and "weak" consonant grades — adds an additional layer of complexity.
The Six Types: Type 1 (-aa/-ää), Type 2 (-da/-dä), Type 3 (-la/-na/-ra/-sta), Type 4 (-ata/-ätä), Type 5 (-ita/-itä), and Type 6 (-eta/-etä). Each type has its own stem-formation rules.
Consonant Gradation: Consonant pairs like pp/p, tt/t, kk/k alternate between strong and weak forms depending on syllable structure. This affects verb stems across all tenses and is the single biggest challenge in Finnish conjugation.
