About Hungarian Conjugation
Hungarian Verb Conjugation
Hungarian verbs feature a system unique in Europe: two complete sets of conjugation — definite and indefinite — determined by the grammatical properties of the direct object. If the object is definite (specific), you use one set of endings; if indefinite (or absent), you use another.
Vowel Harmony: Hungarian is an agglutinative language where suffixes must harmonize with the vowel quality of the verb stem. Front-vowel stems take front-vowel suffixes (e, ö, ü), and back-vowel stems take back-vowel suffixes (a, o, u). This affects every conjugated form.
No Gender, Rich Person: Hungarian verbs never change for gender, but they have a rich person-marking system. The definite conjugation even has a special first-person-singular form (the "-lak/-lek" form) used specifically when "I" acts on "you."
