About Spanish Conjugation
Spanish Verb Conjugation
Spanish verbs conjugate across three groups (-ar, -er, -ir), with -ar being the largest and most regular. Spanish is known for its rich verb morphology — each verb can have over 50 distinct conjugated forms across the indicative, subjunctive, and imperative moods.
Stem-Changing Verbs: Many common Spanish verbs undergo stem vowel changes (e→ie, o→ue, e→i) in stressed syllables. These changes affect the present indicative, present subjunctive, and some preterite forms, but follow predictable patterns: the "nosotros" and "vosotros" forms never change.
Preterite vs. Imperfect: The distinction between the preterite (completed past actions) and imperfect (ongoing, habitual, or descriptive past) is central to Spanish narration. The preterite answers "what happened?" while the imperfect sets the scene and describes states.
