Use probieren when tasting food or attempting something in a practical, often informal way. It can be followed by a noun (etwas probieren) or by an infinitive with zu (probieren, ... zu ...). Compared with versuchen, probieren often implies a hands-on test or tasting; ausprobieren emphasizes testing something out. Imperatives: 'Probier mal!' (informal) or 'Probieren Sie mal!' (formal).
